PLC Vs DCS
Today,there is not much different between PLC and DCS operational and functional as what we have during 80's. These stuff almost the same and equal in term of capability and complexity of process capture and handling. However, the optional is there either to choose a PLC or DCS are depends on scope of project in term of cost, robustness of input or output (probably digital is prefer for PLC) and system maintenance (service/support after completing a project).

YOKOGAWA CENTUM CS1000/3000
Centum CS3000 by YOKOGAWA is the simple design software to learn on DCS control system especially in oil and gas industry. This software includes the logic tools and HMI tools in one software package for engineering development phase.However, to start used this kind of DCS software is very crucial for the installation part. It consist more than 20 steps for PC environment setting that have to follow before this software works successful.
Attached here is the system architecture diagram for review.Perhaps, I'll come out with the installation tutorial for this DCS software sooner.
DCS/PLC via OPC Server
Nowadays, OPC server application is a 'MUST' technology for every big company especially for end user. This application provides the total solution for managing and accessing plant real time data access at anywhere and anyplace. What is OPC ? OPC stand for OLE process control.What is OLE? OLE stand for Object Linking and Embedding for process control.
The very common and widely used of OPC vendor software brand is a OSIsoft. OSIsoft provides the powerful tools by using PI system software for data management. This is the most software that allows users visualize and to build process flow diagrams,values and trending in real time data. The simple architecture of PI server diagram as shown in figure above. From the figure above, we can seen that DCS and PLC can be access directly by PI server via API node.
